4/14/2024 0 Comments Get over it speedrun game![]() ![]() Indeed, perhaps there are things the devs might find personally unsavoury such as speedruns, using excessive hints, their in-joke echo chamber not being better received… and so on. Speedrunners tend to have played the game very thoroughly and properly before doing any speedrunning – they are extracting extra “bonuses” out of the game. I can’t speak for others but I myself would be interested in leaving the game out in the wild and seeing the myriad of ways in which it is investigated and explored. By contrast, a speedrun of let’s say… Mario64… opens up the gamer to completely new experiences and a steep and arduous learning curve regarding technical and mechanical proficiency. In short, there’s not much point to speedrunning point-and-click games because it doesn’t actually open up new dimensions to the game other than plotting the most efficient and shortest path. It doesn’t open up a whole new world to the game – as can be opened up in Zelda games and lots of platformers – and it requires very little mechanical skill and training. The only point of interest is choosing the most efficient path. ![]() I can’t see the same appeal for just combining inventory items, or clicking on foreground objects to solve puzzles.Īdventure speedruns are just about the least thrilling speedruns in theory. However, ultimately, in those games, you are running around killing stuff – it’s just that in a speed-run, you are running around killing stuff constantly and expediently. That’s the dream, anyway.Well, I’ve seen the speed-runs of Half-Life and such games and I admit that they can be a bit challenging. They loved it, they ate it up, and that can only mean the community is going to expand in the future. We had a massive stage, we had a ton of seats, and they were pretty much all filled throughout the whole event - people who may never have been exposed to speedrunning before watching the games that they love being played incredibly quickly. When it comes to the future of the scene in the UK and whether it will continue to grow or not, I just have to look back on our EGX event. It’s a showcase of raw talent and raw skill.” ![]() In other cases, you just get to see some play segments of a game incredibly precisely and incredibly well done to get things done quickly. In some cases, you get to see a game totally broken apart with glitches to cut down on time. A speedrun is a completely different beast. Alternatively, they might watch a casual playthrough on YouTube or Twitch. “Most people play a game once, twice, maybe, if they enjoy it, and then they never play it again. “I think it’s the spectacle,” ponders Matt. People who may never have been exposed to speedrunning before were watching the games that they love being played incredibly quickly. ![]()
